This website, edited by Brian D. Stucky, contains some of the history of Alta Mill, which was located 4 miles west and 6 miles south of Moundridge, KS, and existed from 1876 to 1949.
On the “Story of the Mill” page (click on the button at the top of this page) is an extensive revision of "The Story of a Mill" by Ida Plank Yoder in Mennonite Life, Jan. 1956.
The mill was not only an industry, but a community center. Located 10 miles from Moundridge, Buhler, Halstead, and Burrton. It was a meeting point for people from those communities and others. With a park, river, store, blacksmith shop, and at times post office, it was a unique community fondly remembered by many.
Please join me on a walk down memory lane. I often do, as my grandfather John E. Stucky co-owned the mill for many years.
